Why spay or neuter dogs and cats?
- In six years, one un-spayed female dog and her un-spayed offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs.
- One un-spayed female cat and one un-neutered male cat and their offspring can result in 420,000 kittens in 7 years
- A female cat can have 29 litters in 10 years
- A male cat can sire as many as 2,500 kittens in a single year, and a male dog can sire almost as many puppies.

In addition to reducing the number of unwanted animals, spaying and neutering can improve your pet's health, increase its life expectancy, and improve its behavior.
Sterilizing reduces your pet's urge to roam, which decreases the risk of it running away, getting injured in fights and contracting diseases from bite wounds, or getting hit by a car. Surveys indicate that as many as 80% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered.
Sterilizing can also eliminate or reduce the incidence of several serious health problems, like cancer, that can be difficult or expensive to treat.
Neutered pets tend to be more gentle and affectionate, less interested in other animals, and more focused on their family.
The ASPCA ( American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) says that a sterilized dog or cat lives an average of 2-3 years longer than an unsterilized one , that strays rarely survive more than a few years on their own and that they often die painfully.
FACTS:
- Sterilization won't make your pet fat and lazy. (but overfeeding and lack of exercise will).
- Your kitten or puppy doesn't have to be a year old. Current thinking is that kittens and puppies can be sterilized as young as 16 weeks if they weigh at least 2 pounds.
- Your female puppy or kitten doesn't have to have a litter before she is spayed. Evidence shows that females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier, and every heat cycle increases you pet's chance of breast cancer.
- Mother cats can become pregnant while nursing. A mother can be spayed when the kittens are weaned (8 weeks).
- Your pet's behavior may change- but for the better. Your pet will be less aggressive and less likely to bite, fight, roam, or spray urine to mark territory inside the house and in the yard. Also, "Romeos" will be less likely to hang around your house.
- Spaying and neutering does not affect a dog's natural instinct to protect home and family.
- Your male pet won't feel less manly or suffer any kind of emotional reaction when neutered and it won't affect his appearance or performance as a hunting dogs or watchdog. it may even make him easier to train.
- It is necessary to neuter male pets, even though they aren't ones giving birth. Females can't do it alone.
- The surgery isn't highly risky and it isn't too expensive. If you can't afford the surgery, we may be able to help.
- Spay/Neuter is the most common surgery and your pet will usually resume normal activity with just a day or two of home care. Your Vet can explain the risks and describe the after-care.
- It is a one-time, lifetime investment in your pet that can solve a number of problems for you, your pet and a society already burdened with too many homeless dogs and cats.
- It isn't easy to find homes for a litter of puppies and kittens. If it were, there would be no ads saying "Free to a good home".
- You can't depend on keeping your animal inside during its fertile period. This is a tremendous family responsibility and does nothing to eliminate health and behavioral problems such as spotting and spraying or susceptibility to diseases like cancer.
- Most animals to give birth in private, so your children are not likely to see the miracle of birth. Instead contact us about fostering animals. You can play a invaluable role as a foster family for litters of kittens and puppies.
Instructions to follow after scheduling a spay/neuter appointment
- The night before surgery, take away food & water by 10 pm (if over 4 months old.)
- Bring pet to the Humane Society of the White Mountains between 7 & 7:30 am on the day of the surgery.
- Please ensure that your dog is walked before coming to the clinic. All dogs must be on a leash.
- ALL cats must be in a carrier. If you don't have a cat carrier, we can lend you one on the day before.
- No animals can be lactating. Mothers must be away from their babies for 2 weeks (minimum) to stop producing milk.
- Puppies and Kittens must be at least 16 weeks old and weigh a minimum of 2 pounds.
- After surgery, female pets will be tattooed at the incision.
- You must pick up your pet by 1:00 pm on the day of the surgery. Animals will not be kept overnight. 24 Hour care is not provided.
- Payment is due when you pick up your pet. We accept Cash, Checks, and Major Credit Cards. To be Valid, Assistance Coupons must be presented at that time you schedule an appointment.

Instructions and Important Information - Please READ!
- We strongly recommend that your pet is up to date on vaccinations before surgery, including Bordatella.
- Vaccines are available only in addition to surgery; this is not a low-cost vaccination clinic, it's a low-cost spay/neuter clinic.
- Please do not schedule appointments for animals who only need vaccinations, they will not be honored.
- No other Veterinary services are provided at our clinic, we encourage you to make an appointment with one of the local Veterinarians listed.
